Don't miss one of Tasmania's most exciting forest experiences.

On the way

Stop at the Forest and Heritage Centre in Geeveston, learn about the history of the forests and see the extensive collection of antique woodworking machinery and modern local arts skillfully crafted from Tasmania’s unique timbers, including by our very own on site wood turner.

Explore

Tour the treetops of the Tahune forest along a 40 metre high steel AirWalk. The 671 metre loop walk takes you through the canopy of some of Tasmania's famous trees including Celery-top pine, Sassafras, Myrtle and Blackwood and the towering Stringybarks. In springtime some of the huge trees flower and the light spring rains bring out the beautiful scents of the forest. The highlight of the walk is the 40-metre cantilever, which provides breathtaking views of the forests, mountains and the junction of the Huon and Picton Rivers.

Discover

Stroll the river's edge walking track that leads to two swinging bridges spanning the Huon and Picton Rivers. Modern in construction, they imitate bridge design from generations ago, and provide a walking trail of about 1 hour, leading back to the Visitor Centre along the historic McKay's Track. The swing bridges have a lot of movement in them, as you cross, the river is flowing right beneath your feet, a perfect contrast to the AirWalk experience.

The Huon Pine Trail is a shorter walk taking 20 minutes to complete and follows the edge of the river providing the chance to study the ancient pines up close.

Thrill

Adventure seekers can opt for the Eagle Glide or rafting along the Huon River. The Eagle Glide is a great way to see the wilderness through the eyes of a wedge-tailed Eagle. Experience the freedom of flight from the safety of cable hang gliding, suitable for all ages and abilities the 400m glide takes you from the top of the tree tops, over the Huon River, down to the forest floor… Twice.

Adventure Rafting is also available along this stretch of river, generally tours finish at the Tahune AirWalk and are arranged through the Forest and Heritage Centre in Geeveston. For details contact 03 6297 1836.

Relax

After the tour, relax at the Visitor Centre, with its licensed cafe and gift shop retailing local crafts and wood products. The bistro serves local fare, hot meals and great coffee. For those who prefer to have a barbecue, the Bluestone Shelter and barbecue sites are close by.

A new attraction at the Centre is Southern Forest Threads, a spectacular hand-made quilt, presented to Forestry Tasmania as a memento of its strong ties with the Huon Valley community. Twenty-two women took part in the project, including the Southern Spinners and Craft group and the Huon Valley Quilters, contributing more than 700 hours of labour.
